Weekend of March 6 and 7

LionsDive_Photoshoot_20100306_001_smallIn the weekend of March 6 and 7 several activities took place. On Saturday morning Miranda Perik and I had prepared for another underwater photoshoot. This time with two male and two female models. Sabrina, who participated last time, had brought a friend, Nigel, and the other two models are a couple that is currently on vacation on the island, Anika and Martijn. Miranda had arranged for sunglasses, bikinis and jewelry from several shops for the photoshoot. But unfortunately this day happened to be one of the few days without any direct sunlight.  And direct sunlight is a key component for a successfull underwater photoshoot because with an overcast sky the amount of light underwater is far less and the interesting effect of breaking sunlight on the body is also not available resulting in an effect that looks like the shots are taken above water under bad conditions. The second factor was that the swimming pool that we were allowed to used was not completely clean; in combination with the low light this resulted in unacceptably low quality pictures, so unfortunately there is nothing to show from this underwater shoot.

Something new something special

Miranda Perik, a well-known photographer in Curacao, approached me some time ago with the question if I, as an underwater photographer, was interested to try something new: an underwater photo shoot with models. And sure I was. After quite some preparation and organization the happening took place on Saturday January 16, 2010 in the swimming pool of the Moon Restaurant and Lounge in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.

Hidden cost involved in joining the Curacao Dive Festival

I just got word that the local divers once again have to pay if they want to participate in the Curacao Dive Festival. This is nowhere mentioned on the promotional website, so be warned. Also be informed that there is an alternative; the Curacao Public Library is organizing in cooporation with a number of dive operators several activities during the same period as the "official" Curacao Dive Festival.

Curacao Dive Week

The last week of May will be devoted to diving in Curaçao. Apart from the "official" Curaçao Dive Festival that takes place from May 23 till May 30, 2009 there are several other dive related activities during that week. Poster of Exposition - click for larger versionThe official opening of this "alternative" Curaçao Dive Festival takes place on Friday May 22 in the Public Library. At that time the Dive Exposition will be opened. The exposition is open daily during the opening hours of the Public Library. The library is located at the Abraham M. Chumaceiro Bulevar 17, opposite the Waaigat. From the dive shop Trunkdivers there will be a section devoted to Archaeological Diving on Curaçao and there will be an exposition of several photographs made by the "Duiksmurf", one of the Trunkdivers. The pictures are printed on canvas and are for sale during the exposition. For information contact the photographer by e-mail or check the advertisement on this website.

During that same week on Wednesday May 27, 2009 a multimedia presentation and lecture will be held by Karel Boon and John Dohmen about Archaeoligical diving on Curaçao which focuses on the wreck of the SS Mediator and remnants of the USS Erie.

Coming soon - The Curaçao Dive Guide

The Curaçao dive Guide went to press and is expected to be for sale from the second week of December. This will be a unique dive guide for Curaçao. The guide will contain a large number of the dive sites that are accessible from shore. It will also contain a number of dive sites along the Northern shore of the island. The text is in English as well as Dutch. The size is such that it will fit in the door compartment of your car, 5.82" x 8.27", with 112 pages. The guide is a co-production of two PDIC instructors, Karel Boon who wrote the text and John Dohmen who provided the pictures. The price will be $28.00, less than a single guided dive. For the time being the dive guide will be for sale only in Curaçao. The first edition is rather limited so if you are visting the island soon and want this dive guide you can send me an e-mail to reserve one for you.
