Search and no recovery at Moon and Avila

Moon_search20100411_001_smallIn the weekend of April 10 I got a call from Karel (Trunkdivers) if I was available for a search and recovery operation. I had no other appointments so the answer was "Yes". On Sunday, April 11, we all met at Moon, the Restaurant and Lounge at the end of Pietermaai. There was also the owners of a small boat that sunk a few days before. The people on board were rescued by the Coastguard but the boat went under with everything on board. We asked the owner where exactly this had happened. Read more...

Another Lionfish

CrashSite_20100402_013_smallLast week I saw my first Lionfish; just one week later I saw the next one during my dive at the Crash Site. A certain indication of the fact that this species is spreading fast in our waters. This one was better positioned so I was able to take a picture of this fish in all its splendor. All poisinous fins open in a threatening display probably because I was too close by for his liking. This one, although looking large in the picture was actually smaller than the one at Aqualectra. I estimate this one at about 5 inches (head to tail). The depth were we found this one was about 21 meters (70 feet).
More pictures of this dive can be found in the picture section under Pictures per dive site and then under Crash Site.

My first Lionfish encounter

Aqualectra_20100327_008_smallOn Saterday March 27, 2010, my buddy and I went diving at Fisherman's Wharf (behind the desalination plant). The previous weekend we dove here too and went because of the current to the right (West). This time we wanted to go left and luckily the current allowed this. There was some current, more than usual but not too strong to swim against.

Weekend of March 6 and 7

LionsDive_Photoshoot_20100306_001_smallIn the weekend of March 6 and 7 several activities took place. On Saturday morning Miranda Perik and I had prepared for another underwater photoshoot. This time with two male and two female models. Sabrina, who participated last time, had brought a friend, Nigel, and the other two models are a couple that is currently on vacation on the island, Anika and Martijn. Miranda had arranged for sunglasses, bikinis and jewelry from several shops for the photoshoot. But unfortunately this day happened to be one of the few days without any direct sunlight.  And direct sunlight is a key component for a successfull underwater photoshoot because with an overcast sky the amount of light underwater is far less and the interesting effect of breaking sunlight on the body is also not available resulting in an effect that looks like the shots are taken above water under bad conditions. The second factor was that the swimming pool that we were allowed to used was not completely clean; in combination with the low light this resulted in unacceptably low quality pictures, so unfortunately there is nothing to show from this underwater shoot. Something new something special

Photoshoot_Moon_final_20100116_057

Miranda Perik, a well-known photographer in Curacao, approached me some time ago with the question if I, as an underwater photographer, was interested to try something new: an underwater photo shoot with models. And sure I was. After quite some preparation and organization the happening took place on Saturday January 16, 2010 in the swimming pool of the Moon Restaurant and Lounge in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.
