Mediator

A lot of information about the historical wreck of the Mediator in the harbor of Curacao.

Most of the information in this section is received from Stimana (Foundation for Marine Archeology of The Netherlands Antilles) and used with their permission.

History

The last voyage of the Mediator in 1884.

The ship

From the Transcript of the Register found in the Archives of the Merseyside Museum in Liverpool with additions from the book “Harrisons of Liverpool by Graeme Cubbin:

The wreck

The Mediator has sunk in the harbor entrance in front of the “kleine werf” (Small Wharf) in Scharloo.

Archeological activities and finds

To aid in the specification of the location of archeological findings on the wreck a baseline along the length of the ship was set up from the tip of the bow till the mid of the stern. This baseline is marked with tags at every 5 meters showing the distance from the bow.

Recent activities

Here you will find the activities that happened since I came in contact with Stimana (November 2005) and which I find worth mentioning.

Stimana's periodicals

Periodically Stimana publishes an issue reporting on recent activities on the Mediator dive site. These issues give a good impression of what a team of volunteers is doing to preserve the wreck and to inform tourists and local divers about what can be seen at this archeological dive site.

You can download and read an issue by clicking on the links. You need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the issues. This reader can be downloaded from the adobe.com web site.
